  Kangra district is having a topography that some of the parts like Milwan at 400 m altitude, while area of Bara Bhangal are at the altitude of 5500 m. Indora block of Kangra district falls in sub-humid sub-tropical zone where annual precipitation works out about 1000 mm and mean temperature of about 240 C, Dehragopipur and Nurpur blocks fall under humid sub-tropical zone where the annual rainfall is between 900-2350 mm and mean temperature about 200C to 240C. Palampur and Dharamsala fall under wet temperate zone where the temperature ranges from 150C to 190C and annual rainfall is about 2500 mm (average of last fifty five years). Other parts of the Kangra district fall under hill area where the mean annual temperature varies from 130C to 200C and annual rainfall is 1800- 3000 mm.

  The soils of the Palam Valley are leached acidic heavy soils with medium fertility status. The soils of Kangra and Nurpur valley are light textured with neutral pH with good fertility status. The soils of Changar region are coarse textured pebble embedded shallow soils with low water holding capacity, undulating / steep topography and poor fertility status. The soils of Shiwalik foothill region are light textured well drained with poor fertility status. Bias Basin soils are deep alluvial silty loam with neutral pH and high fertility status.

  In district Kangra during 1997, there were 1,85,657 operational land holdings under which 2,09,712 hectares area was cultivated with average size of 1.13 ha. Out of these land holdings marginal farmers contributed 1,59,745 holdings (86.04%), with an area of 96,202 ha., small farmers 20,137 holdings (10.85%) with an area of 58,154 ha, and big farmers had 68 land holdings (0.04%) with an area of 5,464 ha. rest of 3.07% were semi and medium farmers with holdings ranging from 1.9 to 49.9 ha.

Kangra Agro Ecological Situation                                                     Back To Top>>
District Kangra, which comprises of area within three agro-ecological zones has further been divided into 6 agro-ecological situations on the bases of variations in altitude, topography, precipitation (rainfall & snow), thermal regime, soil type, irrigation facilities and land use. The details of area falling under different AESs are given as under:
AES-1 Rainfed, Moderately Plain area with High temperature
AES-2 Riverbed high temperature low rainfall area.
AES-3 Rainfed subtropical “Changer” area with Low rainfall.
AES-4 Moderate rainfall, low temperature, irrigated area.
AES-5 High rainfall, acidic soils, hail storm prone area.
AES-6 Grassland, meadows and other snow blessed area of high hills temperate

An efficient agricultural marketing system guarantees the farmers, better price for farm products. Therefore to provide better market facilities to farmers there are 1037 Agricultural co-operative societies working in the district. All the co-operative societies are doing good jobs.

The State Marketing Board is also playing a vital role to the need of farmers. There are 5 nos. of Agriculture Regulated Market in the district and 5 Nos. of Tehsil marketing societies in the district. Beside this one milk-chilling centre has been setup at Dhagbar where the milk of the area is being collected and marketed. Four Fruit preservation plants and a sericulture plant have been setup in public and private sector where related produce is being processed and catering to the need of farmers by providing them good prices.

The road network is well served in the district by connecting various markets of the district as well as adjoining district of the State and abroad.
