

Agriculture plays important role in the states economy and majority of people derive their live hood from agriculture and allied activities. Traditionally agriculture is subsistence oriented but now farmers are shifting towards commercialization. Many farmers in the state are practicing commercial farming through diversification and value addition.
There are number of programmes and schemes already government is implementing to facilitate farmers to improve productivity and their economic status. The effective implementation of these schemes requires greater analysis of field reality, involvement of stakeholders like farmers, extension functionaries, line departments, scientists, for which skills in project management and coordination are very much essential.
With changing agriculture scenario and demanding situations extension has to be more responsive. This requires a greater attitudinal change and capacity building of extension functionaries. It was realized at various level and finally SAMETI was established by Maharashtra Government on 1st July 1992, Government Order No: T&V/5/1092/CR-2/A17, The institute is presently located in temporary building and being run with minimum staff.
SAMETI is being conducted 12-14 training programmes on various subjects like Agricultural Extension, Horticulture, Soil and water conservation, Social forestry, Food Processing & Marketing, Seed Certification etc., Subjects areas covered under training and visit system, and an average giving training to 220 officers annually for Class I and Class II officers of agriculture and allied departments.
State Government has re-organized agricultural department and now one window system approach is being implemented since 01-07-1998. In the new organizational set-up this institute will be an apex-training for imparting training to field functionaries of agriculture and line departments. Seven agricultural management training Institutes namely Khopoli, Kolhapur, Nasik, Shaolapur, Amaravati, Aurangabad and Nagpur will be working under this apex institute. SAMETI guides and supervise the activities of these Institutes.
Training will be the main activity. Besides this other activities SAMETI will take up in order to facilitate agriculture and allied sector of state more effectively.
