At present 65 percent of Indian population are dependent on agriculture and this sector contributes about 25 percent to our GDP, yet the potential issues and problems of agriculture sector are ignored to a large extent. Further, studies indicate that coverage of agriculture in print and electronic media is less than 2 percent. With
a view to increase media share for agriculture, we would like to sensitize
the students of journalism and mass communication on agriculture and its
issues, as they are the prospective journalists both for print and
electronic media. As
these students come mainly from non-agriculture disciplines at their basic
graduation level, it is imperative to understand the basics of agriculture
to present stories on agriculture.
We would like to advocate the orientation program for improving the
mind share for agriculture among the prospective journalists.
Most of the universities are offering journalism courses covering topics related to print and electronic media. The students on becoming journalists are not only covering NEWS in general but also relating to agriculture and rural development. As our institute basically supports the farming community through various approaches, journalism plays an important role in the transfer of information about the latest technologies in agriculture and allied sectors. |
