PRIVATE EXTENSION :
APPROACHES AND CHALLENGES IN THE MILLENNIUM

Indian Agriculture has a tall dream of doubling the food production by 2010. The gap between the reality and dream is very wide. We, the extension workers, have the moral responsibility and professional challenge to reduce this gap.

Even though performance of Agricultural Extension in taking the benefits of Green Revolution to the farmers, and making our country self-reliant in food production as appreciated, all is not well now. Public Extension System is questioned on economic and efficiency ground.  As a result, Extension Privatization is under active consideration in India.In this background, National Seminar on "Private Extension" was organized by MANAGE with the objective of providing a academic forum at national Level which recognize the contributions of Private Extension Services to understand their strength and weakness, learn from their innovations, generate thinking in the direction of promoting and regulating Private Extension, to visualize their role in 21st century and prepare a suitable ground so that private and public extension work hand in hand for the benefit of farmer.

With the diversification and modernization of agricultural practices, there is a need to augment support and extension services for agriculture. For this purpose, a Scheme for setting up Agriclinics and Agribusiness Centres by agricultural graduates will be launched with the support of NABARD.
